Nvidia has issued a stern warning regarding the use of smuggled chips in datacenters, labeling such endeavors as a 'losing proposition'. This statement follows a report from the Financial Times, which revealed that over $1 billion worth of Nvidia's artificial intelligence chips have illegally made their way into China. A spokesperson for the company emphasized that building datacenters with unauthorized products poses significant technical and economic challenges. "Datacenters require service and support, which we provide exclusively for authorized NVIDIA products," the spokesperson stated to CNBC. The Financial Times highlighted that the influx of these chips coincided with the implementation of restrictions during the Trump administration on shipments of Nvidia's H20 chips to China. Despite these prohibitions, Nvidia's B200 chips have gained traction on the black market, with Chinese distributors starting to sell them to local data center suppliers as early as May. These suppliers cater to various Chinese AI companies, further complicating the landscape. The ongoing competition between the U.S. and China in the artificial intelligence sector has made China a crucial market for chip manufacturers. However, the U.S. has imposed restrictions on advanced processor sales to China, citing national security concerns. Recently, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced plans to resume sales of H20 chips to China after discussions with the Trump administration eased some regulatory restrictions. The U.S. government had previously mandated that Nvidia obtain a license for such sales, complicating the export of the chip, which was designed to circumvent earlier controls. Huang has expressed ambitions to push for even more advanced chip sales to China, signaling Nvidia's desire to maintain its competitive edge in the global AI race.
