Nvidia to launch Singapore research hub as city-state boosts AI plans

Nvidia, the global leader in artificial intelligence chips, is set to establish a new research facility in Singapore. This announcement is part of a broader initiative by the city-state to enhance its AI capabilities, revealed on Wednesday. This facility marks Nvidia's inaugural research hub in Singapore and its second in the Asia-Pacific region. The newly established lab will prioritize advancements in embodied AI, aiming to improve AI infrastructure efficiency. It will collaborate closely with academic researchers, industry stakeholders, and government bodies. Nvidia's decision to expand in Singapore aligns with the city's aspiration to become a key player in the AI landscape, particularly for the practical development, testing, and implementation of AI technologies. Singapore's focus on embodied AI encompasses technologies such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and drones. This area is viewed as a critical frontier in AI, promising significant advancements that could enhance various sectors, including services and manufacturing. In addition to Nvidia's announcement, Singapore plans to introduce a testbed later this year designed to assist private companies in developing and validating commercially viable AI robotic technologies. Major industry players like Certis, DHL, Grab, and QuikBot are expected to be among the first to utilize this testbed. Moreover, the government intends to partner with AI robotics firms such as Slamtec, Unitree, and QuikBot to explore practical applications of embodied AI through the establishment of a new Center for Intelligent Robotics. Initial tests will focus on using AI robots for tasks like food and parcel delivery, as well as cleaning and security patrols, complementing human workers. These developments were announced during the kickoff of Singapore's ATxSummit, a technology conference that this year emphasizes the deployment of AI solutions.
