In a major announcement on Monday, Nvidia revealed its intention to invest as much as $100 billion in OpenAI. This significant investment aims to enhance the development of expansive data centers designed specifically for training and operating advanced AI models. The companies have confirmed the signing of a letter of intent, which includes plans to deploy an impressive 10 gigawatts of power—enough to supply millions of households—with Nvidia technology to bolster OpenAI’s upcoming AI infrastructure. This strategic move could potentially lessen OpenAI's dependence on Microsoft, its primary investor and provider of cloud services. Following a partnership update from Microsoft in January, which allowed OpenAI to engage with other collaborators for AI infrastructure, the company has since pursued partnerships with various entities on data center initiatives, including a project named Stargate. Nvidia expressed that this investment will enhance existing alliances OpenAI maintains, including those with Microsoft, Oracle, and SoftBank. OpenAI has designated Nvidia as its “preferred strategic compute and networking partner,” signaling a robust collaboration for future AI development. However, details regarding the form of Nvidia's investment—whether in chips, cloud credits, cash, or another format—remain unclear.
