Nvidia stock closes at record, pushing market cap past $5 trillion

Nvidia shares reached a historic closing high on Friday, marking the first such milestone since October and pushing the company's market capitalization beyond $5 trillion. This surge comes as investors flock to the AI chip sector, eagerly anticipating earnings reports from major tech players next week. The stock experienced a significant boost of 4.3%, closing at $208.27. Since the end of 2022, Nvidia's stock has skyrocketed over 14 times, fueled by the surging demand for artificial intelligence services and technologies. Major companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, along with AI model developers like OpenAI and Anthropic, heavily rely on Nvidia's graphics processing units. The rally on Friday was catalyzed by unexpectedly strong earnings reported by Intel, a chipmaker that has recently begun to engage more with the AI market. Intel's stock surged by an impressive 24%, marking its best day since 1987. Competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm also saw their shares rise, with AMD climbing 14% and Qualcomm increasing by 11%. Despite recent investor hesitance towards large-cap technology stocks, particularly due to rising oil prices linked to the conflict in Iran and subsequent supply chain challenges, the technology sector has regained favor. With the demand for AI infrastructure showing no signs of abating, the Nasdaq index has jumped 15% in April, positioning itself for its best month since April 2020. However, Nvidia must prepare for intensifying competition in the AI arena. Alphabet, one of its significant customers, has announced plans to introduce new chips designed to rival Nvidia’s offerings, set to be available to cloud clients later this year.
