Chinese companies are eagerly placing orders for Nvidia's H20 AI chips as the tech giant prepares to resume sales in mainland China. This shift comes in the wake of CEO Jensen Huang's recent discussions with former President Donald Trump, with Nvidia anticipating the receipt of necessary licenses from the U.S. government shortly. The company estimates that this move could unlock an additional $15 billion to $20 billion in revenue for the year. In an official statement, Nvidia confirmed that it is actively seeking approvals from the U.S. government to restart the sales of the H20 chips, noting that the government has indicated that licenses will be forthcoming. The company expressed optimism about commencing deliveries soon. Since the debut of ChatGPT in 2022, Nvidia's financial success has been closely tied to the escalating demand for specialized hardware capable of efficiently running AI models. The company has engineered its data center GPUs to handle the extensive parallel computations required by neural networks, allowing for the simultaneous processing of numerous matrix operations. While the H20 chips are the most advanced AI processors Nvidia can legally sell in China, they are less powerful than the versions available in other markets due to export restrictions enacted in 2022. Currently, Nvidia is prohibited from selling its highest-performance GPUs in China. Nevertheless, major Chinese tech players like ByteDance and Tencent are reportedly racing to secure orders for the H20 chips through a vetted list managed by Nvidia.
