Nvidia becomes world's most valuable company, but many still pronounce its name wrong

Nvidia has officially ascended to the status of the world's most valuable company, with its stock reaching unprecedented heights, firmly establishing itself at the forefront of discussions surrounding artificial intelligence. However, amidst this remarkable achievement, one detail continues to baffle many: how to correctly pronounce the company's name. The tech giant has clarified this confusion, stating that the proper pronunciation is 'en-VID-ee-uh,' contrasting with the common mispronunciation of 'NUH-vid-ee-uh.' This clarification comes from Nvidia's own brand guidelines. Founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, the company’s name has an interesting backstory. The founders initially used 'NV' as an abbreviation for 'next version' during their development processes. An early name choice, NVision, was abandoned due to trademark issues with a toilet paper brand. Eventually, Huang suggested 'Nvidia,' drawing inspiration from the Latin term 'invidia,' which translates to envy—a fitting title for a company that aimed to leave its competitors envious, as co-founder Priem once noted. Today, Nvidia’s influence is undeniable, with a market capitalization nearing $3.9 trillion. The company’s chips are integral to a variety of technologies, from generative AI applications to autonomous vehicles, solidifying its essential role in the tech landscape. In a personal show of dedication, CEO Jensen Huang even had the Nvidia logo tattooed on his arm when the company’s stock first surpassed $100 over a decade ago, a moment he recalls as more painful than anticipated.
