Nvidia is reportedly weighs ramping up H200 production to meet surging demand in China

Nvidia is reportedly considering increasing the production of its H200 chips to satisfy a surge in orders from Chinese companies. This decision comes after the company successfully persuaded the Trump administration to approve sales of these advanced chips to China, which had previously been restricted under the Biden administration due to proposed regulations aimed at limiting the export of advanced AI technology. The H200 chips, a part of Nvidia's Hopper generation designed for training large language models, were previously off-limits for sale in China. However, the U.S. Department of Commerce recently granted Nvidia the necessary approvals, allowing the company to sell the H200 GPUs in exchange for a 25% revenue share from those sales. As a result, Nvidia is now witnessing a significant demand influx from Chinese enterprises, prompting discussions about scaling up production capacity. Despite this potential growth, the import of the H200 chips into China remains uncertain as Chinese officials deliberate on the matter. These chips are believed to be substantially more powerful than the H20 models that Nvidia had previously adapted for the Chinese market. By expanding the manufacturing of the H200 GPUs, Nvidia aims to tap into a burgeoning market in China, where local companies are striving to enhance their AI capabilities amidst competition and national security concerns that have restricted access to the latest hardware. Major Chinese firms such as Alibaba and ByteDance, which are actively developing their own AI technologies, have reportedly reached out to Nvidia to discuss placing substantial orders for the H200 chips, which are currently produced in limited quantities. An Nvidia spokesperson emphasized that the company is carefully managing its supply chain to ensure that sales to authorized customers in China do not disrupt their ability to meet demands in the United States.
