Nvidia kills Windows XP-era Control Panel “after 20 years of dedicated service”

In a significant shift for users of GeForce GPUs, Nvidia has officially announced the discontinuation of its long-standing Control Panel, which has been a staple since its debut in 2006. This change is part of the rollout of version 610.47 of Nvidia’s Game Ready and Studio drivers. The legacy Control Panel, complete with its familiar green logo, will no longer be installed by default. Nvidia has stated that all essential features previously available in the Control Panel have been successfully transitioned to the newer Nvidia app. According to Andrew Burnes, Technical Marketing Content Editor at Nvidia, the new app not only preserves the core functionalities of the Control Panel but also enhances user experience with improved speed and efficiency. The Nvidia app introduces advanced capabilities that extend beyond what the Control Panel offered, including streamlined driver updates and DLSS overrides. These enhancements allow users to utilize the latest upscaling models in games that traditionally supported only older versions of DLSS. For those who currently have the old Control Panel on their systems, it will remain intact unless a clean installation of the new driver is performed. Should users wish to reinstall the Control Panel, it will still be accessible as a separate download from the Microsoft Store, albeit without future updates or new features from Nvidia.
