Nvidia in talks with U.S. to sell a more advanced chip to China, Jensen Huang says

Nvidia is currently engaged in discussions with the U.S. government regarding the potential sale of a new, advanced chip to China, as confirmed by CEO Jensen Huang on Friday. This development follows reports indicating that the tech giant is working on a more powerful artificial intelligence chip known as the B30A, which surpasses the capabilities of the H20 chip, the only semiconductor Nvidia is permitted to sell in China at this time. Concerns have arisen within the U.S. regarding the possible military applications of advanced American chips in China. During a recent visit to Taiwan, Huang addressed inquiries about the B30A, emphasizing that the decision to offer this new product for AI data centers ultimately lies with the U.S. government. "We're in dialogue with them, but it's too soon to know," he stated. Last month, Huang expressed optimism about Nvidia's ability to sell more advanced chips in China than the H20 during a visit there. However, the company's presence in the Chinese market has become increasingly challenging. The H20, a less-advanced chip specifically designed for China, faced export restrictions from the U.S. government earlier this year. In July, Nvidia received permission to resume sales of this chip, agreeing to share 15% of its sales revenue from China with the U.S. government in return for export licenses. Despite these developments, Nvidia encountered new obstacles as Chinese authorities raised concerns regarding potential security vulnerabilities in its chips. In response, the company assured that its products do not contain any hidden backdoors or 'kill switches.' Recent reports have also indicated that the Chinese government is advising local companies against using Nvidia chips. Huang has advocated for Nvidia's ability to sell chips to China, arguing that it is crucial for the development of AI in the country to rely on American technology, rather than allowing domestic companies like Huawei to dominate the market. This sentiment appears to have resonated in Washington, as evidenced by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's remarks in July, which indicated that the approval for the H20's export was granted under the condition that Nvidia would not be sharing its most advanced technologies. However, the Financial Times noted that these comments were perceived as disrespectful by Chinese officials, leading to increased regulatory pressure on local firms to refrain from purchasing the H20. Furthermore, a report from The Information revealed that Nvidia has instructed some of its suppliers to halt production related to the H20 graphics processing units. Amid these developments, Nvidia's shares saw a decline of 1.34% in premarket trading as of 5:53 a.m. E.T.
