Nvidia buys $5 billion stake in Intel, planning AI chip collaboration

Nvidia has announced a significant investment, acquiring a $5 billion stake in Intel as part of a comprehensive agreement to co-develop several generations of data center and PC products. The purchase price for Intel shares is set at $23.28 each, representing a slight discount compared to the recent trading values. This move positions Nvidia as one of Intel's largest shareholders, holding approximately 4% of the company. In early trading on Thursday, Intel's stock surged by as much as 30%, reflecting investor optimism about this new partnership. The collaboration will see the two tech giants integrate their architectures through Nvidia's NVLink interface, which facilitates rapid data and control code transfers between CPUs and GPUs. This enhanced connectivity is vital for AI applications that rely on the simultaneous operation of multiple GPUs for processing large data sets. For the data center market, Intel plans to produce a new line of x86 CPUs tailored for Nvidia’s AI infrastructure, targeting enterprise and hyperscale clients. In the consumer segment, Intel will develop x86 system-on-chips that incorporate Nvidia’s RTX GPUs, which could provide a competitive advantage against AMD’s offerings. Currently dubbed “x86 RTX SoCs,” these chips are expected to power a diverse array of PCs. This strategic alliance comes at a crucial time for Intel, which has faced challenges in the rapidly evolving AI chip market, unlike Nvidia, which has recently enjoyed record-breaking success. Intel has undergone significant changes, including the appointment of a new CEO, workforce reductions, and a shift in focus toward capital expenditure discipline. On the other hand, Nvidia has solidified its position as a leading semiconductor company, achieving remarkable growth and market valuation. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, "Intel’s leading data center and client computing platforms, combined with our process technology, manufacturing, and advanced packaging capabilities, will complement NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated computing leadership to enable new breakthroughs for the industry." This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for both companies as they aim to reclaim market share from competitors like AMD.
