Nvidia's stock wrapping up tough week as Wall Street focuses more on competition than growth

Nvidia reported impressive earnings on Wednesday, surpassing expectations and demonstrating robust growth prospects. CEO Jensen Huang highlighted a significant surge in compute demand, stating, "compute demand is skyrocketing." However, investor sentiment seems to be shifting as evidenced by a 6% decline in Nvidia's stock over the week, marking its most substantial retreat since November. This downturn has placed Nvidia's stock in negative territory for the year, aligning it with other major tech companies facing similar challenges. A key worry among investors is the anticipation that capital expenditures in the tech sector may soon reach their peak. This could lead to a notable slowdown in Nvidia's growth rates in the upcoming quarters. Additionally, competitive pressures are mounting as firms that heavily invest in AI chips are beginning to explore alternatives to Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs). A significant development occurred when OpenAI, historically reliant on Nvidia's GPUs for training and operating AI models, announced plans to utilize 2 gigawatts of Amazon Web Services' Trainium AI chip capacity. This announcement coincided with OpenAI's recent $110 billion funding round, which saw Amazon contributing $50 billion and Nvidia adding $30 billion. Patrick Moorhead, CEO of Moor Insights and Strategy, commented that this move represents a major validation of Amazon's strategy in custom AI silicon, providing OpenAI with a valuable safeguard against Nvidia's supply constraints and pricing power. Last month, OpenAI also committed to leveraging 750 megawatts of computational power from the smaller AI chipmaker Cerebras. Despite these shifts, OpenAI continues to utilize Nvidia's technology, indicating plans to deploy 5 gigawatts of computing power with Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin GPUs. This is in addition to existing Nvidia GPUs utilized across various cloud platforms such as CoreWeave, Microsoft, and Oracle. On the financial front, Nvidia reported a striking 73% year-over-year revenue increase to $68 billion for the January quarter and projected a 77% growth rate for the current quarter, the fastest in a year. However, analysts foresee a decline in growth rates to 30%, 13%, and 14% over the next three fiscal years. Moreover, Meta has begun looking into alternatives to Nvidia, with Advanced Micro Devices announcing that it would provide up to 6 gigawatts of its Instinct GPUs to the social media giant. Reports have also surfaced that Meta has secured a multibillion-dollar deal with Google for its Tensor Processing Units. Following these developments, Broadcom, which manufactures custom chips for Google, experienced a 5% drop this week. As Nvidia's stock continues to slide, down 16% for the year, some analysts suggest this could present a buying opportunity. Jefferies analysts, who recommend purchasing Nvidia shares, noted, "While it's uncertain when investors will regain optimism towards these AI-focused companies, the stock's decreasing price may eventually lead to a rotation back to Nvidia."
