Nvidia makes big play for Europe with infrastructure deals

In a significant move on Wednesday, Nvidia unveiled a series of partnerships with various European nations and enterprises, aiming to solidify its role in the global artificial intelligence landscape. CEO Jensen Huang highlighted these collaborations during his keynote address at Nvidia's GTC event held in Paris, France. Nvidia is positioning itself as a pivotal player in the infrastructure sector, assisting countries in constructing data centers powered by its advanced graphics processing units (GPUs). This initiative is designed to harness AI's capabilities for enhancing local economies and communities. Recently, Huang embarked on a similar tour in the Middle East, where Nvidia is set to introduce its latest chips for major data center projects in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. "Every industrial revolution begins with infrastructure. AI is the essential infrastructure of our time, just as electricity and the internet once were," Huang stated in a press release. He emphasized Europe’s growing recognition of the necessity for AI-driven data centers, describing these facilities as crucial for the region's technological evolution. Huang projected that AI computing capacity in Europe will experience a tenfold increase over the next two years. Nvidia's strategy involves broadening its international presence and integrating itself into national-level AI infrastructures. This expansion is particularly vital given the U.S. export restrictions that have impacted Nvidia's market in China. Among the notable partnerships announced was one with French startup Mistral, which aims to create an "AI cloud" that will utilize 18,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips. This collaboration will empower businesses to leverage Mistral's AI models effectively. Nvidia also disclosed infrastructure initiatives in Italy and Armenia, while telecommunications giants such as Orange and Telefonica are collaborating with Nvidia to implement AI applications and large language models as part of the new agreements. In Germany, the company is developing an "industrial cloud" equipped with 10,000 GPUs, specifically tailored to meet the needs of European manufacturers. A central theme of Nvidia's mission in Europe is the concept of “sovereign AI,” advocating for data centers and servers that serve EU users to be physically located within the region. Additionally, Nvidia plans to establish "tech centers" across Europe, focusing on advanced research, workforce development, and accelerating scientific progress in nations like the U.K., France, Spain, and Germany. The company also announced an expansion of its DGX Cloud Lepton product, a marketplace for GPUs that has been integrated with the AI model repository, Hugging Face, allowing developers global access to GPUs for AI applications. While Nvidia is renowned for its hardware, particularly its GPUs, the tech titan is increasingly emphasizing its software offerings to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI sector. The company previously introduced Nvidia NIM, a pre-packaged AI model that can be quickly deployed, allowing developers to create applications effortlessly. With the latest announcement, any large language model available on Hugging Face can also be deployed via Nvidia's NIM service. This strategy of intertwining hardware and software aims to fortify Nvidia’s leadership position in the AI domain.
