Nvidia buys AI software provider SchedMD to bolster open-source AI push

In a significant strategic move, Nvidia has announced its acquisition of SchedMD, a software provider specializing in artificial intelligence solutions. This decision underscores Nvidia's commitment to advancing open-source technology and enhancing its investment in the AI ecosystem. The acquisition is set to bolster Nvidia's software capabilities, reinforcing its position against increasing competition worldwide. SchedMD is best known for developing Slurm, a widely used open-source workload management system tailored for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI applications. Slurm plays a critical role in efficiently scheduling massive computing tasks that can consume a substantial portion of a data center's server resources. While Slurm remains freely accessible to developers and organizations, SchedMD has traditionally offered engineering and maintenance services to support its technology. This acquisition highlights the growing significance of software within Nvidia's overall strategy, complementing its proprietary CUDA platform, which is essential for many developers. Although the financial specifics of the transaction were not disclosed, Nvidia affirmed its intention to continue distributing SchedMD's software under an open-source model. Nvidia emphasized the importance of Slurm in the contemporary AI landscape, noting in a recent blog post that it is instrumental for generative AI applications utilized by foundational model developers to manage training and inference tasks. Leadership at SchedMD expressed excitement over the deal, with CEO Danny Auble stating, "Nvidia's extensive expertise and investments in accelerated computing will propel the development of Slurm, ensuring it remains open source while addressing the demands of next-generation AI and supercomputing." This announcement coincided with Nvidia's launch of its latest collection of open-source AI models, the Nemotron 3 series, which promises to deliver enhanced speed, cost-efficiency, and intelligence compared to previous iterations. Together, these developments signal Nvidia's determination to strengthen its ecosystem in the face of emerging rival open-source models, particularly those being developed in China. Founded in 2010 in California, SchedMD currently employs around 40 individuals.
