Nvidia unveils new AI model and expands Japan’s physical AI ecosystem

Nvidia has made a significant announcement regarding its expansion in the physical AI sector in Japan, introducing a new AI model designed for robotics and vision applications. The newly launched Cosmos 3 Edge aims to enhance the ability of systems to perceive and navigate their physical surroundings in real time. This model represents an evolution in AI technology, known as a world model, which can learn from a broader set of inputs compared to traditional large language models. This rollout follows the earlier introduction of Cosmos 3 in May and marks a pivotal moment during CEO Jensen Huang's visit to Japan. Nvidia is actively working to establish a coalition with prominent local companies such as Fujitsu, Hitachi, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, further solidifying its presence in the Japanese market. "The next frontier of AI is in the physical world, and this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Japan," stated Huang. He emphasized Japan's historical role in modern manufacturing and its potential to innovate for the era of intelligent industries. Nvidia's collaboration with Japanese firms comes on the heels of Microsoft's substantial $10 billion investment aimed at bolstering AI infrastructure and enhancing cybersecurity in the region. Japanese investment powerhouse SoftBank is also heavily investing in AI, looking to collaborate with Microsoft and Sakura Internet to advance the technology within Japan. The AI market in Japan is projected to reach an impressive $27.9 billion by 2029, presenting numerous opportunities for U.S. enterprises. This growth is fueled by Tokyo's commitment to facilitating AI adoption across various sectors and the willingness of local companies to engage in international partnerships. Ajay Rajadhyaksha, global chairman of research at Barclays, noted that Japan has a competitive edge in Asia, bolstered by its diverse AI landscape and potential for clean structural growth. In addition to its initiatives in robotics, Nvidia is also making strides in the healthcare and biotechnology arenas. The company is pushing the boundaries of agentic AI, particularly in areas such as drug discovery and medical robotics. Nvidia highlighted the ongoing development of Tokyo-1, an AI drug discovery consortium operated by Xeureka, a subsidiary of Mitsui. Launched in 2023, this platform leverages the Nvidia BioNeMo Agent Toolkit to expedite autonomous AI drug discovery. Major players in the pharmaceutical industry, including Astellas Pharma Inc, Daiichi Sankyo, and Ono Pharmaceutical, are already integrating Nvidia's advanced biology toolkit to enhance their operational efficiencies. Beyond the biotech sector, Nvidia is also pursuing opportunities in industrial automation in partnership with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, further expanding its reach in Japan.
