Arm shares edge higher in premarket as Nvidia shakes up its AI bets

Shares of British semiconductor company Arm experienced a 1.4% increase in premarket trading on Wednesday following the news that Nvidia has sold its stake in the firm. The latest filings reveal that Nvidia, which previously held 1.1 million shares valued at approximately $155.8 million at the end of Q3, has offloaded its investment. Nvidia's relationship with Arm dates back to 2023, when it was part of a group of strategic investors that collectively purchased $735 million in Arm shares. This group included prominent names like Apple, Google, Samsung, and TSMC. Notably, Nvidia's investment occurred after an unsuccessful attempt to acquire Arm for $40 billion, a deal that was initially agreed upon with Arm's former owner, SoftBank, back in 2020. However, regulatory challenges led to the collapse of this acquisition in 2022. Despite the divestment, Nvidia's ties to Arm remain intact. The company has retained a 20-year licensing agreement, with CEO Jensen Huang affirming their ongoing support for Arm. Nvidia's Grace CPUs, touted as the backbone of future data centers, are based on Arm's technology. Arm's fiscal third-quarter earnings report revealed a 26% year-on-year sales increase, amounting to $1.24 billion, surpassing analyst expectations. Morgan Stanley noted that the earnings highlighted ongoing momentum in AI projects and indicated significant operational expenditures, suggesting a focus on long-term demand. Despite a positive earnings report, Arm's shares fell in after-hours trading due to slightly conservative guidance. Currently, Arm's market capitalization sits at around $135 billion, while Nvidia's stock rose by 2% in premarket trading, building on gains from Tuesday that halted a two-day slump. Morgan Stanley maintains an 'overweight' rating on Arm, setting a price target of $135, representing a potential increase of over 6% from Tuesday's closing price. Nvidia continues to hold substantial stakes in various tech companies, including Intel and Nokia, with a recent $1 billion investment in the Finnish telecommunications firm announced in October.
