Nvidia to invest $4 billion in two photonics companies

Nvidia has announced a significant investment of $4 billion into two photonics technology firms, marking a bold step forward in the realms of artificial intelligence and advanced communications. The U.S. semiconductor powerhouse revealed on Monday that it will allocate $2 billion each to Lumentum and Coherent. Lumentum, a U.S.-based innovator, focuses on developing cutting-edge optical and photonic solutions that support the infrastructure essential for AI, cloud computing, and next-generation communications. Similarly, Coherent specializes in photonics technology, utilizing light (photons) to create high-performance optical components and systems. In a statement, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, "Together with Lumentum, NVIDIA is advancing the world's most sophisticated silicon photonics to build the next generation of gigawatt-scale AI factories." He further emphasized Nvidia's commitment to partnering with Coherent in the development of next-generation silicon photonics aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure.
