Nvidia is making significant investments to capitalize on the booming AI sector, recently announcing a groundbreaking partnership worth €1 billion ($1.15 billion) with Deutsche Telekom. This collaboration aims to establish an "AI factory" in Munich, designed to enhance Germany's AI computing capabilities by an impressive 50%. Dubbed the "Industrial AI Cloud," this ambitious project will deploy over 1,000 Nvidia DGX B200 systems along with RTX Pro Servers, incorporating up to 10,000 Blackwell GPUs. The goal is to deliver AI inferencing and various services to German enterprises while adhering to strict German data sovereignty regulations. Early collaborators in this initiative include Agile Robots, which will utilize their bots for server rack installations, and Perplexity, set to leverage the data center for localized AI inferencing for German businesses. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom has highlighted the potential applications of digital twins and physics-based simulations for industrial sectors. In this venture, Deutsche Telekom will manage the physical infrastructure, while SAP will contribute its Business Technology platform and relevant applications. This partnership emerges amidst ongoing calls from the European tech community for reduced dependence on foreign tech infrastructure and stronger support for local alternatives. Simultaneously, tech companies have voiced concerns regarding the EU's regulatory framework for AI, claiming that current rules may hinder innovation. Earlier this year, the EU pledged €200 billion to establish "AI gigafactories" across Europe, focusing on critical industrial applications. However, funding for AI projects in Europe has lagged behind the U.S., where giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle have invested heavily in extensive data center infrastructures. Deutsche Telekom has clarified that this initiative is distinct from the EU's gigafactory program. As CEO Tim Höttges remarked, "Mechanical engineering and industry have made this country strong, but we face challenges. AI represents a tremendous opportunity to enhance our products and reinforce our strengths in Europe."
