
Nvidia, a leading player in the artificial intelligence sector, has joined forces with Corning, renowned for its glass manufacturing, to establish three cutting-edge optical technology facilities in North Carolina and Texas. This ambitious collaboration is set to create a minimum of 3,000 new jobs while enhancing Corning’s U.S. optical manufacturing capacity by a staggering tenfold, according to a joint announcement made by the companies on Wednesday. The financial specifics of the partnership have not been disclosed, yet the announcement led to a notable 14% surge in Corning's stock, while Nvidia's shares also experienced a near 3% increase. This multi-year agreement marks a significant milestone for both companies, which have benefitted immensely from the surge in investments following the introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022. This development has catalyzed a wave of funding for advanced processors and systems to support sophisticated AI applications. Although detailed plans were not shared, it is anticipated that Nvidia will transition from traditional copper to Corning's advanced optical glass fibers in its AI rack-scale systems, a technological shift known as co-packaged optics. During Nvidia's GTC conference in 2025, CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the critical role of co-packaged optics in the future of AI infrastructure. Corning's CEO, Wendell Weeks, praised the partnership, stating, "What Nvidia is doing is nothing short of extraordinary, not just for the future of AI, but for the American advanced manufacturing workforce." Corning has seen its stock rise over 250% within the past year, driven by the company’s strategic pivot into the evolving tech landscape. In a related development, Meta announced an investment of up to $6 billion to support Corning’s optical cable plant in Hickory, North Carolina, which is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs. Nvidia has solidified its position in the AI domain, with its graphics processing units being crucial for the advancement of large language models and enabling tech giants like Alphabet and Meta to scale their data centers effectively. Over the past five years, Nvidia’s stock price has skyrocketed approximately 14-fold, although recent trends indicate a diversification of investor interest towards other AI infrastructure companies, including chipmakers like Intel and memory suppliers such as Micron, alongside Corning. Analysts have long been eager for Nvidia's large-scale adoption of co-packaged optics, a technology poised to dramatically enhance data transfer speeds while reducing energy consumption for AI workloads. Corning has established a reputation for producing display glass for Apple’s iPhones, yet its optical communications business remains its largest and fastest-growing segment. Since the invention of optical fiber in 1970, Corning has supplied millions of miles of cables to connect AI data centers across major companies. Through the partnership with Nvidia, Corning aims to integrate glass fiber connections directly between chips, potentially replacing thousands of copper wires within rack-scale systems. Fiber-optic cables, crafted from flexible glass strands, transmit data via photons at significantly higher speeds and with lower energy expenditure compared to conventional copper wires. As Weeks pointed out, the energy required to move photons is substantially less than that needed for electrons. Vlad Galabov, a researcher at Omdia, noted that this technology minimizes power wastage by shortening the distance data travels, thus enhancing overall efficiency. He also remarked that Nvidia’s innovations have accelerated advancements across the entire ecosystem. The shift to optical fibers not only reduces signal loss compared to copper but also facilitates faster and more reliable communication, particularly between the numerous GPUs housed in data centers. Huang highlighted the transformative potential of AI, calling it a historic opportunity to revitalize American manufacturing and supply chains. As the partnership progresses, Nvidia continues to release network switches that leverage similar optical technologies, positioning them alongside key AI components. Competitors such as Broadcom and Marvell are also developing similar solutions, while Intel is working on its own co-packaged optics technologies. Earlier this year, Nvidia allocated $4 billion to invest in Coherent and Lumentum, firms specializing in lasers and components essential for converting data between light and electrical signals, which are then transmitted through Corning’s optical cables. Weeks affirmed his commitment to collaborating with various chip manufacturers on integrating glass into semiconductor packaging in the future. As the demand for GPUs in servers increases significantly, the necessity for fiber optics—due to their economic and energy-efficient advantages—becomes more pronounced. Corning is set to host an investor day at the New York Stock Exchange, coinciding with its 175th anniversary celebrations.
