Nvidia deepens early-stage push into India’s AI startup ecosystem

Nvidia is intensifying its efforts to engage with India’s burgeoning artificial intelligence startup scene, launching a series of partnerships aimed at connecting with founders even before their companies officially launch. This initiative is designed to foster relationships with potential customers in one of the globe's fastest-expanding developer markets. The chipmaker's latest collaboration is with the early-stage venture firm Activate, which is set to support around 25 to 30 AI startups through its inaugural $75 million fund. This partnership will provide these startups with preferential access to Nvidia's technical resources, enhancing their development process. This announcement coincides with other India-focused initiatives, including a collaboration with AI Grants India, aimed at assisting early-stage founders and strengthening ties with various venture capital firms focused on the South Asian market. As India hosts its AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, which has attracted major tech players like OpenAI and Google, Nvidia's Chief Executive Jensen Huang was expected to attend but had to miss the event due to unforeseen circumstances. Instead, executive vice president Jay Puri led a delegation to engage with AI researchers, startups, and developers. India has quickly become a vital hub for AI development, presenting a significant market opportunity for Nvidia as it seeks to promote the use of its chips and software solutions. By engaging with founders at the earliest stages, Nvidia is strategically positioning itself to meet the growing demand from new AI-native companies. Aakrit Vaish, the founder of Activate, noted that Nvidia's previous involvement with startups in India was less proactive compared to the U.S. However, the company is now eager to collaborate with founders during their initial development phases. Activate plans to leverage this new approach by directly connecting its portfolio startups with Nvidia's experts. The venture firm is backed by notable investors, including Vinod Khosla and Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma, which highlights the strong network supporting its strategy. For Nvidia, partnering with an early-stage venture firm is a logical move; fostering relationships with promising AI startups will likely lead to increased reliance on its computing infrastructure as these companies expand. Vaish explained that as startups grow, they typically require more AI computing resources, making early engagement crucial for Nvidia’s future business prospects. Nvidia already supports over 4,000 startups in India through its Inception program, and this week, it further strengthened its local ecosystem by partnering with various venture firms to discover and fund AI startups. Additionally, the company has joined forces with AI Grants India to assist over 10,000 early-stage founders in the upcoming year. Nvidia has been progressively enhancing its outreach to startups in India, including its participation in the India Deep Tech Alliance, a consortium of U.S. and Indian investors aimed at providing strategic and technical support to emerging startups. The increased activity from Nvidia underscores the escalating competition among global tech companies to attract AI developers and startups in India, which is rapidly becoming one of the most promising talent pools outside the United States.
