Nutanix claims it has poached 30,000 VMware customers

In a notable shift within the virtualization landscape, Nutanix claims to have successfully attracted around 30,000 customers from VMware. This migration comes in the wake of rising customer dissatisfaction stemming from Broadcom's acquisition of VMware. During a recent press conference at Nutanix’s .NEXT event in Chicago, CEO Rajiv Ramaswami highlighted this significant transition, attributing it to growing discontent with Broadcom's strategies regarding VMware. He emphasized that the sentiment among customers is increasingly negative towards Broadcom's approach. Since Broadcom took ownership of VMware in November 2023, many users have been looking for alternatives, citing several reasons for their departure. These include escalating costs, mandatory bundling of products, the discontinuation of perpetual licenses, and the challenges posed by a reduced number of channel partners, making VMware less accessible for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Nutanix has not clarified the exact breakdown of its new customers in terms of SMBs versus larger enterprises. However, indications suggest that the adoption of Nutanix’s platform is particularly strong among mid-market clients, as the company seeks to attract larger customers through gradual deployments. Ramaswami noted that this influx of new clients represents Nutanix’s best quarterly growth in new customer acquisitions in the last eight years. He stated that the majority of these new clients are transitioning from VMware, specifically to Nutanix’s hyper-converged infrastructure solutions. Additionally, Nutanix's VP of Technology Services, Brandon Shaw, mentioned that Western Union has been in the process of migrating 900 to 1,200 applications from VMware to Nutanix over the past six months. This strategic shift is part of Western Union's broader initiative to enhance customer focus through new IT partnerships, despite having previously maintained effective communication with Broadcom. The ongoing migration trend underscores the evolving dynamics of the IT sector as companies reassess their virtualization needs amidst shifting market conditions.
