Nuclearn, a burgeoning startup focused on integrating artificial intelligence into the nuclear power sector, has successfully raised $10.5 million in a Series A funding round. This investment was spearheaded by Blue Bear Capital, with additional contributions from AZ-VC, Nucleation Capital, and SJF Ventures. The growing interest in AI within the nuclear industry is fueled by the technology's potential to optimize operations rather than manage reactor processes directly. According to Bradley Fox, co-founder and CEO of Nuclearn, major tech players such as Meta, Google, and Microsoft have already forged partnerships with startups and reactor operators, highlighting the appeal of nuclear energy's reliable power supply. Nuclearn's founders, Fox and Jerrold Vincent, began their journey at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, where they started experimenting with ways to enhance efficiency through data science and advanced AI models. Their initial successes sparked demand from other facilities, prompting requests for similar solutions to be implemented at their plants. As interest in their offerings surged—especially during the COVID-19 pandemic—the duo decided to establish Nuclearn. The startup has since developed AI models specifically tailored to the unique language and requirements of the nuclear industry. Nuclearn's technology is currently in use across more than 65 reactors worldwide. Additionally, Nuclearn provides customizable AI solutions for utilities and power providers, ensuring that their software can also function securely on-site when necessary. Their tools can streamline routine documentation processes, allowing reactor staff to review and approve generated reports. Fox emphasizes that while AI is becoming a significant asset, it is still regarded as a supplementary tool by regulatory bodies like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The responsibility for decisions ultimately remains with human operators, who can define how much automation they are comfortable implementing based on their trust in the AI's capabilities. This flexibility ensures that if uncertainty arises, the system can revert to human oversight, positioning the AI as a reliable assistant in the nuclear energy landscape.
