In a significant shift, nuclear startups have recently attracted over $1 billion in funding, driven in part by the increasing energy demands of data centers. However, new federal policies regarding nuclear safety could further expedite the development of reactors, potentially compromising public and environmental health. Under the Trump administration, the Department of Energy (DOE) has modified its oversight of nuclear power plants located on its properties. A report by NPR reveals that approximately one-third of the existing regulations have been eliminated, with many others undergoing substantial revisions. Notably, previous mandates designed to mitigate groundwater and environmental contamination have been downgraded to mere recommendations, and exposure limits for workers have been raised. Moreover, security measures at these facilities now largely fall under the purview of the companies operating them. Alarmingly, these changes were enacted without public consultation or notification. It's important to note that the revised regulations apply only to reactors situated on DOE land, while those constructed elsewhere continue to be regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Several startups are racing to build demonstration reactors on DOE properties, aiming to meet a deadline set by the Trump administration for July 4, 2026. As these developments unfold, the balance between innovation and safety in the nuclear sector remains a critical concern.
