Nothing launches AI tool for building mini apps using prompts

The realm of AI-driven app development is experiencing significant growth, and Nothing, the smartphone manufacturer, is eager to join the movement. On Monday, the company introduced Playground, an innovative AI tool that empowers users to create applications through straightforward text prompts. These creations can be deployed on a designated platform known as Essential Apps. Currently, Playground specializes in building widgets, such as flight trackers, meeting reminders, or even virtual pets. Users can either create these widgets from scratch using text commands or modify existing applications on the Essential Apps platform to better suit their needs. For more technically inclined users, there is an option to tweak the underlying code to refine app functionality. However, Nothing has clarified that full-screen app development isn't available yet, citing the need for further technological advancement. This announcement follows a recent funding milestone for the company, which secured $200 million in a round led by Tiger Global. CEO Carl Pei has articulated the company's ambition to develop an operating system infused with AI features and to create new devices centered around artificial intelligence. In a recent interview, Pei expressed his frustration over the slow pace of software innovation within the smartphone industry. He noted, "Many companies tend to imitate industry giants like Apple, taking the safer route. I believe software development should be more dynamic and responsive to breakthroughs in AI. Our devices have extensive contextual knowledge about users, which is currently underutilized." To date, Nothing has released only one AI-enabled application: Essential Space, which allows users to share screenshots, record voice notes, and transcribe meetings. It’s important to highlight that many modern smartphone operating systems already offer these functionalities, and users can install various AI apps if needed. Although Nothing has established itself as a smartphone brand, it remains a smaller player compared to industry titans like Google, Apple, and Samsung, holding less than 1% of the global smartphone market according to IDC data. Pei believes that Nothing's unique positioning could be advantageous, as the company aims to develop hardware tailored for AI use. He envisions that mastering AI integration in smartphones could pave the way for creating specialized hardware solutions. While the concept of vibe coding appears promising, previous attempts at similar functionalities on smartphones have struggled to gain traction, primarily due to security and maintenance issues, as highlighted by AppFigures data. Pei acknowledged this challenge, emphasizing the necessity of balancing security with the ability for developers to innovate. "With millions of users relying on our devices, any new feature we launch must be user-friendly and minimize the risk of errors. Maintaining security across these applications will be a priority for us," he stated. Currently, the company is not charging for the Playground AI tools, and there are no immediate plans for a paid tier, as the focus remains on cultivating a vibrant community around this new tool and celebrating valuable contributions.
