Nothing has officially started the global rollout of Nothing OS 4.0, its latest software update based on Android 16. This new version aims to deliver a sleeker interface, improved system coherence, and introduces a suite of AI-powered creative tools through its innovative Essential Apps framework. Retaining the essence of OS 3.0, this update brings notable enhancements in design, interactivity, and overall device intelligence. One of the standout features is the implementation of Live Updates via the Glyph Interface. Users can now receive real-time updates for rides, deliveries, and timers displayed both on the screen and Glyph lights, ensuring a seamless experience without needing to open applications. The compatibility of Glyph Progress extends to any app that supports Android 16’s Live Updates, thus significantly broadening its usability. Nothing OS 4.0 also debuts a more profound Extra Dark Mode, which not only increases contrast but also optimizes power consumption across the system. This feature now applies to first-party applications like Essential Space and Launcher, with plans for further app support. The update has revamped animations throughout the operating system, enhancing touch responses, swipes, and gestures. Users will notice a more dynamic experience, with subtle background scaling when opening or closing apps, creating a sense of fluidity and connection. Additionally, volume controls have been upgraded to include gentle haptic feedback at both the upper and lower limits. New widget sizes are introduced, such as 1×1 and 2×1 layouts for Weather, Pedometer, and Screen Time, while a new Pop-up View feature allows for simultaneous use of two floating applications, easily switchable through gestures. To keep the home screen tidy, Hidden Icons let users conceal apps in the App Drawer while still providing quick access. Exclusive new features for Phone (3) users include enhanced Flip to Glyph options, improved Pocket Mode, new Glyph Toys like Hourglass and Lunar Cycle, as well as an upgraded Glyph Mirror Selfie that saves both mirrored and original images. Initially rolling out to Phone (3), Nothing OS 4.0 will soon be available for other Nothing and CMF devices. In conjunction with the OS update, the company is also expanding Nothing Playground, where users can describe ideas in the Widget Builder to have AI generate custom Essential Apps. These newly created apps will be housed within the new Widget Drawer, introduced with OS 4.0, which organizes both built and collected tools in an efficient manner.
