Nothing OS 4.0 Beta adds pre-installed apps: Akis Evangelidis reacts to update

Nothing, the innovative smartphone manufacturer co-founded by Carl Pei, has commenced the rollout of the Open Beta for its latest operating system, Nothing OS 4.0, tailored for the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro models. This update introduces an exciting new feature called Lock Glimpse and marks a significant step as the company experiments with including pre-installed third-party applications on select non-flagship devices. Lock Glimpse aims to enhance the user experience by refreshing the lock screen with a selection of high-quality wallpapers categorized into nine themes. Users can effortlessly swipe left on their lock screens to access this feature, which, notably, is disabled by default. Nothing reassures users that enabling this feature does not involve the collection of personal data. Additionally, users can look forward to future updates that may allow them to completely customize their lock screens with personal photos, personalizing their unlocking experience. In a blog post on Friday, co-founder Akis Evangelidis highlighted the company's mission to redesign everyday smartphone interactions. He stated, "Our goal is to integrate features optimally while ensuring everything stays under the user's control." This update signifies a departure from Nothing's previous approach of minimal pre-installed software, as they now plan to introduce a curated selection of third-party apps on certain non-flagship devices. These apps, which include popular choices like Instagram, are chosen based on their relevance and potential to enhance the device's functionality, such as improving camera performance or facilitating content sharing. Evangelidis emphasized the need for thoughtful decisions in an industry characterized by razor-thin profit margins, aiming to deliver a superior user experience while maintaining financial viability. He reassured users that all pre-installed applications would remain easily removable, allowing complete control over device customization. Acknowledging the challenges of establishing a smartphone brand in a market dominated by major players, the co-founder recognized the high entry costs, intricate supply chains, and fierce competition that hinder innovation, particularly for newcomers with limited resources. He concluded by reiterating the company's commitment to transparency, promising to keep users informed about new features and pre-installed applications while welcoming their feedback as the operating system continues to evolve.
