In a bold vision for the future of technology, Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, has expressed that personalized operating systems will soon become the norm for smartphone users. Speaking at the World Government Summit 2026, Pei highlighted that despite the current reliance on manual prompts for AI functions, the evolution of operating systems is headed towards a more individualized experience. Pei stated, "In the future, everybody will have their own personalised operating system, because we’re all different." This philosophy underpins Nothing's strategy, which is not focused on developing a one-size-fits-all OS for billions, but rather aims to create a roadmap towards a uniquely tailored system for each user. He emphasized the importance of recognizing individual goals and personalities, which necessitates a customized approach to smartphone usage. To illustrate this point, Pei discussed Nothing's AI-powered tool, "Essential Apps," which currently requires users to interact with it through manual prompts. However, he anticipates a future where the system will learn user behaviors, automatically suggesting and organizing tools based on individual preferences. "Once we reach that stage, we don't have to ask anymore," he explained, envisioning a time when the OS will intuitively understand user needs and make decisions without explicit requests. In addition to personalizing operating systems, Pei shared insights on how AI is enhancing Nothing’s internal development processes, particularly through what he calls "vibe coding." Since January, he has been experimenting with this approach, which he believes has significantly improved the development of new models. Pei noted, "Now it's actually being able to help me in the product development," revealing that by harnessing advanced AI capabilities, he has been able to prototype features that were previously sidelined. As Nothing continues to push the boundaries of smartphone technology, Pei's vision for personalized operating systems represents a significant shift towards more intelligent and intuitive user experiences.
