Nothing CEO says his smartphone startup is targeting Gen Z to break into a market dominated by Apple and Samsung

The smartphone market is notoriously challenging for new entrants, with many startups facing significant hurdles. Yet, Carl Pei, CEO of the smartphone startup Nothing, believes his company has discovered a unique path to success. During a recent appearance on Alex Heath's Access podcast, Pei shared insights into the brand's target demographic: young consumers eager to express their individuality. Pei highlighted that Nothing's average user age is around 26, contrasting sharply with Samsung's average user, who is approximately 45. He noted that Apple's appeal among younger audiences has diminished as they didn’t witness the company's rise in the same way previous generations did. According to data from 9 to 5 Mac, about 70% of Apple's users are between 18 and 44 years old. Recent market statistics show Samsung leading the global smartphone sector, with Apple closely following. Despite this fierce competition, Nothing is carving out its own niche. The five-year-old startup now boasts a workforce of 800 to 900 employees and is projected to reach $1 billion in sales this year. Their smartphone offerings, including models like Phone 2 and Phone 3, are priced between $300 and $700, featuring a distinctive design with a transparent back that showcases some internal components. In a review from Business Insider, the Phone 2 was praised for its striking design and impressive camera performance, even with its older processor. Pei acknowledges that competing with Apple directly is not the immediate goal; instead, he emphasizes the importance of pacing and finding ways for both companies to coexist. He mentioned that Nothing is exploring innovative product designs that complement rather than compete with Apple's lineup. In addition to smartphones, the brand also offers watches, headphones, and apparel, further expanding its presence in the tech landscape.
