Northwood Space secures a $100M Series B and a $50M Space Force contract

The space sector is becoming increasingly congested as new satellites launch at an unprecedented rate, a trend that is expected to continue as launch costs decrease. This growing environment has positioned Northwood Space, a startup focused on modernizing ground-based communication systems, to attract significant attention. In a noteworthy announcement this week, the El Segundo, California-based company revealed that it successfully completed a $100 million Series B funding round. This round was spearheaded by Washington Harbour Partners from Washington D.C., known for its active investments in the space industry, alongside co-lead Andreessen Horowitz. In addition to this funding boost, Northwood has also secured a $49.8 million contract with the United States Space Force aimed at enhancing the satellite control network, which plays a critical role in managing various governmental space missions, including GPS satellite tracking and control. Bridgit Mendler, the founder and CEO of Northwood, expressed her excitement during a call with reporters, highlighting that the company has achieved significant milestones in just a few years, particularly after closing its $30 million Series A less than a year ago. "The interest in funding for space tech and defense tech is at an all-time high, and this has presented us with an opportunity to expand both responsibly and rapidly," Mendler stated. She acknowledged the swift pace of growth, mentioning the dual fundraising efforts within the same year and the substantial capital raised. "We are prepared for this surge from a production perspective," she affirmed. The new funds will allow Northwood to meet the rising demand for its services, marking a critical turning point for the business. "We are receiving constant inquiries from customers seeking ground solutions, and we want to ensure that resource limitations do not hinder our ability to support their missions," Mendler added. Northwood’s innovative approach involves creating smaller phased-array antenna systems designed to either complement or replace larger, traditional dish antennas. This strategy, particularly as a vertically integrated operation, is gaining traction in the market. Mendler emphasized the complexity and investment required for such advancements, stating, "It demands significant risk and diverse expertise to effectively address the challenges of ground station operations." She believes that by comprehensively managing ground solutions under one roof, Northwood can provide substantial value to the industry. The company's offerings have resonated with commercial clients like SpaceX and Amazon, who are establishing extensive satellite internet networks and managing their own ground stations. However, many other players face capacity constraints and often rely on third-party providers for ground solutions, which may not always be readily available. According to Northwood's CTO, Griffin Cleverly, the increase in capacity resulting from the latest funding will be particularly beneficial for clients scaling up their satellite constellations. Currently, Northwood's portal sites can manage eight satellite links, but by the end of 2027, the company anticipates its next-generation ground stations will handle between 10 and 12 links, with the potential to communicate with hundreds of satellites. The partnership with the Space Force underscores the growing appeal of Northwood’s solutions to government entities, especially as a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report highlighted ongoing capacity challenges with the satellite control network. The report indicated that increased demand on the system could jeopardize mission success for users reliant on it. With these developments, Northwood Space is positioned to play a vital role in the future of satellite communications.
