Rocket Report: Russia’s rocket engine predicament; 300th launch to the ISS

In the latest edition of our Rocket Report, we explore significant developments in space exploration and missile technology. As we approach the exciting prospect of astronauts venturing around the Moon for the first time in over 53 years, there are mixed sentiments regarding NASA's Artemis program. Concerns about the exorbitant costs of the Space Launch System, the intricate design of new commercial lunar landers, and a challenging budget landscape have left many questioning the long-term viability of these plans. However, for those who grew up after the Apollo missions, this upcoming journey represents a long-awaited milestone. In a notable development, North Korea announced the successful completion of the final ground test for a solid-fuel rocket engine intended for long-range ballistic missiles. This advancement, reported by the Associated Press, is seen as a significant step toward enhancing their military capabilities that could potentially threaten the continental United States. The test, which took place on Monday and was overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, marks the ninth iteration of this solid rocket motor, which boasts a thrust capacity of 1,971 kilonewtons (approximately 443,000 pounds), surpassing previous models. Solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) present distinct advantages over their liquid-fueled counterparts, which have predominantly made up North Korea's missile stockpile. They offer enhanced storage longevity and greater ease in concealment, transportation, and on-demand launching. The newly developed solid rocket engine is slated for use in the Hwasong-20 missile, as per North Korean state media. Analysts suggest that North Korea might conduct another ICBM test by the year's end, possibly to assert its military strength ahead of a significant ruling party congress anticipated in early 2026.
