AlphaFold pioneer who won a Nobel Prize alongside Demis Hassabis leaves Google DeepMind for Anthropic

John Jumper, a renowned chemist and computer scientist celebrated for his contributions to AI, has announced his departure from Google DeepMind to join Anthropic, an emerging player in the AI landscape. This shift marks another significant transition of talent within Silicon Valley, highlighting the allure of AI startups. Having spent nearly a decade at Google, Jumper expressed gratitude towards his team, stating in a post on X, "The entire GDM team taught me so much about how to do great science. GDM is a special place, and I’ll still be excited to hear about what amazing things they discover next." His tenure at DeepMind is particularly noted for leading the AlphaFold project, which represents a groundbreaking advancement in predicting protein structures from amino acid sequences. AlphaFold has revolutionized biological and medical research by providing over 200 million protein structure predictions, significantly accelerating the research process that could typically take months or even years. Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, praised Jumper’s contributions, stating, "What we achieved with AlphaFold changed the world, and showed the field what was possible with AI for science and medicine, lighting the way for how AI can benefit humanity." Jumper, alongside Hassabis, was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their pivotal work on AlphaFold. His move to Anthropic coincides with a trend of tech leaders from major companies like Google and Meta transitioning to AI startups, as firms like Anthropic and OpenAI become increasingly attractive, especially with anticipation of their initial public offerings. Jumper has not disclosed his specific role at Anthropic but mentioned he plans to take some time to recharge before diving into his new position.
