2026 Nissan Leaf review: The best budget EV on sale right now

Long before the advent of the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3, the Nissan Leaf pioneered the electric vehicle (EV) landscape as a commitment from a major automaker to make EVs accessible to the masses. However, the second-generation Leaf faced challenges due to inadequate battery management, which caused it to fall behind its competitors. With its third iteration, Nissan addressed the Leaf’s significant shortcomings by integrating liquid cooling for the battery pack, enhancing performance and longevity. Built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, the new Leaf boasts improved interior space and range efficiency while occupying less road space than the previous hatchback model. Our initial test drive in San Diego, known for its favorable driving conditions, left a strong impression, placing the Leaf at the top of our 2025 evaluations. While a high-end hybrid Porsche 911 is enticing, the affordability of the Leaf is hard to overlook—one could purchase five fully equipped Leafs for the price of a base Carrera GTS. In the real world, budget often dictates choices, making the Leaf an appealing option. Nissan plans to introduce a more affordable version equipped with a 52 kWh battery pack soon. Currently, the available models feature a 75 kWh (usable) battery and a robust 214 hp (160 kW) electric motor that delivers 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) of torque, powering the front wheels. The starting price for the S+ trim is a competitive $29,990. While it rides on 18-inch wheels and offers an impressive range of 303 miles (488 km), this variant lacks certain features that many EV enthusiasts may find essential, such as heated front seats and a heat pump. For those seeking additional amenities, the $34,230 SV+ trim includes heated front seats, a larger infotainment system, multiple USB-C ports, wireless phone charging, and LED turn signals. It also features the versatility of using the J1772 charge port as a 120 V “vehicle to load” outlet. The test vehicle, priced at $38,990, is the Leaf Platinum+, which encompasses all previous features along with upgraded 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, a premium 10-speaker sound system, a heads-up display, powered hatchback, an interior vehicle-to-load AC socket, and a panoramic roof with electrochromic dimming. Overall, the 2026 Nissan Leaf stands out as a practical and budget-conscious choice in the electric vehicle market, offering a blend of range, features, and value that appeals to everyday consumers.
