Cheaper, lower-capacity Switch 2 cartridges could mean fewer Game Key Cards

Cheaper, lower-capacity Switch 2 cartridges could mean fewer Game Key Cards

The introduction of Nintendo's Switch 2 has sparked a debate among gamers regarding the data-free, download-enabled Game Key Cards. These cards, while cost-effective for publishers, have drawn concerns from players about the long-term viability and access to their digital purchases. Despite the controversy, publishers have favored Game Key Cards due to the savings associated with production costs, as they lack the pricey flash memory found in traditional cartridges. However, recent developments suggest a shift in this practice. A publisher, Inin Games, announced that Nintendo is now offering more affordable cartridge options with reduced storage capacities, a move that could lead to more physical game releases on the Switch 2. Inin Games, known for titles like R-Type Dimensions III, previously stated that switching to a full physical cartridge would significantly hike manufacturing costs, prompting a potential retail price increase of at least €15 (approximately $20). Yet, in a recent update on social media, the company revealed that Nintendo's new smaller cartridge size options have made it feasible to reassess production costs. As a result, Inin Games has opted to replace the Game Key Cards initially planned for their retail version with full physical cartridges. This decision will see the game’s price rise by €10 (around $13) due to higher production expenses, although this is less than the previously speculated increase. Furthermore, early pre-order customers for R-Type Dimensions III will benefit from this change, securing the full cartridge without any extra cost.
