Nintendo Switch 2 hype leads to shortages, special store opening hours

The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 made its debut on Thursday, igniting a wave of excitement among gaming enthusiasts that resulted in special store hours and notable shortages in various markets. Nintendo aims for the new console to replicate the phenomenal success of its predecessor, which has sold over 152 million units since its launch in March 2017, making it the second-best-selling console in the company's history, trailing only the Nintendo DS. Analysts report that demand for the Switch 2 is extremely high. George Jijiashvili, a senior principal analyst at Omdia, stated, "Today marks the largest console launch ever, leading to a frenzy of Nintendo fans checking local stock and awaiting deliveries." The original Switch is celebrated for its innovative design that seamlessly blends home and portable gaming, allowing users to play on their TVs and then easily transition to taking the console on the go. According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, a staggering 2.2 million individuals in Japan entered a lottery for a chance to buy the Switch 2 on launch day, far exceeding the company's expectations and the quantity available for stores. Shortages in Japan are anticipated to continue, with Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, mentioning, "The demand for Switch 2 in Japan is extraordinarily high, likely outpacing demand in other regions." In China, JD.com reported 400,000 reservations for the console, although not every reservation guarantees a sale. In the United States, Best Buy opened select stores at midnight for in-person purchases, while Walmart began online sales at midnight ET and opened Supercenters at 6 a.m. ET, although the console is already sold out on Walmart's website. Meanwhile, the U.K. appears to have more stock available, with Amazon UK listing the Switch 2 for delivery on Friday, along with other retailers like Currys. Jijiashvili noted, "Given the pent-up demand, launch day sell-outs were expected. However, we believe Nintendo is prepared and that supply will stabilize in the coming weeks." Last month, Nintendo projected sales of 15 million units for the Switch 2 in the fiscal year ending March 2026, a figure some analysts deem conservative. Toto predicts sales could reach 20 million units in the first year, while Omdia estimates sales of 14.4 million units in 2025 alone, surpassing the original Switch's first-year performance.
