In a scene echoing the excitement of past console launches, gaming enthusiasts flocked to stores across Tokyo on Thursday for the eagerly awaited debut of the Nintendo Switch 2. With expectations of limited availability, passionate fans lined up early to secure their units, highlighting the intense demand for this next-generation gaming console. "The demand is through the roof," remarked Serkan Toto, founder of Kantan Games consultancy. At Bic Camera in Ikebukuro, successful lottery winners eagerly awaited the store's opening, with many expressing their joy at finally obtaining the coveted device. Yumi Ohi, a 30-year-old delivery contractor who traveled from neighboring Saitama, could hardly contain her emotions after previously missing out on other lottery draws. Since its launch in 2017, Nintendo has sold an impressive 152 million units of the original Switch, which became a cultural phenomenon thanks to major titles like "The Legend of Zelda" series and the COVID-19 hit "Animal Crossing: New Horizons." The new Switch 2 features enhancements such as a larger display and improved graphics, and is launching with titles like "Mario Kart World." Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst at Ampere Analysis, noted that the extensive base of existing Switch users could lead to robust sales early in the console's lifecycle. "Nintendo is better prepared this time around to handle the overwhelming demand," he added. Priced at $499.99, the Switch 2 launch serves as a critical test for Nintendo's supply chain amid ongoing global challenges. Recently, the company projected sales of 15 million units in the current fiscal year, along with 4.5 million units of the original Switch. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa assured that the company is ramping up production to meet the anticipated demand. "I wanted to own the Switch 2 as soon as it was released. It’s a special occasion," said Shinichi Sekiguchi, a hotel receptionist in his thirties. Nintendo reported an overwhelming 2.2 million applications for its Switch 2 lottery in Japan, with pre-orders at Target selling out in under two hours. According to Toto, customers might face weeks or even months before they can find a Switch 2 on store shelves. Investor sentiment is similarly optimistic, with Nintendo's shares nearing record highs and rising nearly 30% this year. However, there are concerns about sustaining momentum post-launch, especially among casual gamers who may hold off until more titles are available. Harding-Rolls pointed out that the initial lineup of first-party games might not be as compelling as some had hoped, prompting some users to wait. Forecasts by Ampere suggest Switch 2 sales could surpass 100 million units by 2030. The new title "Mario Kart World" is set to retail at $79.99, stirring discussions about game pricing. Nintendo is also working to attract third-party developers to expand its library. Longtime gamer Akitomo Takahashi, who recalls the high prices of games from the Super Nintendo era, expressed his eagerness to play "Elden Ring" on his new console.
