In a surprising turn of events, Nintendo is set to bring back the long-forgotten Virtual Boy, a device that marked its brief foray into virtual reality in the 1990s. Despite the company's numerous nostalgic re-releases over the years, the Virtual Boy has remained largely neglected. However, this is about to change in February 2026. Nintendo is introducing its first official re-release of Virtual Boy games, available exclusively to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. To enjoy these retro titles, players will need to invest in a specialized Virtual Boy-shaped dock priced at $100, or opt for a more affordable cardboard holder at $25. Starting February 17, subscribers in the US and Canada can play the re-released Virtual Boy games by docking their Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 into these retro-inspired accessories. The games will be displayed using a split-screen mode, aiming to recreate the original's unique 384×224 resolution and its distinctive four-shades-of-red stereoscopic display. Nintendo's announcement emphasizes that the dedicated dock is essential for gameplay, meaning that players without this accessory will not be able to experience the titles on a standard screen. Additionally, the company has indicated that there will be purchase limits on the plastic replica of the dock, suggesting it may become a collectible item. Meanwhile, the cardboard alternative appears to be more widely accessible. Moreover, players will need to utilize Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers, as the iconic dual d-pad controller from the original Virtual Boy won't be making a comeback in this release, marking a departure from the classic design. This revival of the Virtual Boy offers a fresh opportunity for fans to engage with a piece of Nintendo history, albeit with a modern twist.
