However, the selection of Matthew Ridley—a British journalist and hereditary peer with a history of fringe climate change views—as the first speaker raises eyebrows. While Ridley acknowledges the reality of climate change, he controversially posits that its effects could ultimately benefit humanity through increased plant growth and reduced mortality from cold-related illnesses, a stance that diverges from mainstream scientific consensus.
