AI Boom Sparks Billion-Dollar Data Center Race in Nigeria

Nigeria is witnessing a significant influx of investment in data centers, fueled by the growing online engagement of its youthful, tech-savvy demographic and the ambition to leverage artificial intelligence as a catalyst for its ongoing digital transformation. This development is solidifying Nigeria's status as a leading technology hub in Africa. Major global and regional players, including Equinix, Microsoft, MTN Nigeria, Rack Centre, Airtel Nigeria, and Open Access Data Centres, are collectively pouring nearly $1 billion into state-of-the-art facilities aimed at managing sophisticated computing demands and catering to the continent’s rapidly increasing internet users. "In the next ten years, I predict that AI workloads will not only drive growth in capacity but also promote a diversification of infrastructure," noted Wole Abu, managing director of Equinix for West Africa, which is investing $140 million to bolster its operations in Nigeria. With a current digital literacy rate of 50%, the country is targeting a 70% rate by 2027, which is expected to result in a surge of users generating data and seeking AI-driven services. Nigeria's youthful population of nearly 240 million, with a median age of just 18, is contributing to a data explosion, driven by mobile internet usage, gaming, video streaming, and remote working trends. This demographic shift is increasing the demand for robust and efficient digital infrastructure as businesses transition from traditional on-premises solutions to cloud and hybrid models, leading to the establishment of data centers that are strategically located closer to users to support AI workloads and connect local computing with global networks. “This momentum indicates a significant economic transition,” stated Abideen Yusuf, general manager for Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana. “With a dynamic young population, growing internet access, and a thriving entrepreneurial landscape, Nigeria is positioning itself as a digital frontrunner in Africa.” While countries like Kenya, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and South Africa are also attracting investment, Nigeria distinguishes itself through its commitment to developing inclusive AI solutions. According to Abu, this initiative focuses on creating AI capabilities tailored to African contexts, including local languages and addressing regional issues, necessitating both local processing power and global connectivity. The demand for sector-specific solutions is also on the rise. For example, the agricultural sector is increasingly using satellite imagery, weather modeling, and IoT sensors, all of which require substantial data processing. Abu added, "Advanced mining operations leveraging 5G technologies will further accelerate the need for edge computing and data management." Recent regulatory changes that provide a framework for digital governance, formally recognize online transactions, and enhance data protection laws are enhancing Nigeria's appeal to investors. The cloud computing market in Nigeria is growing at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 26%, according to Microsoft’s Yusuf. "As organizations seek improved data security and scalability, the demand for data centers is consistently increasing." Market analysis from Mordor Intelligence indicates that the value of the cloud computing sector is expected to rise from approximately $1.03 billion this year to $3.28 billion by 2030. In Lagos, the Itana Digital Zone is pioneering Africa’s first comprehensive growth environment for AI and data enterprises, designed to foster innovation while reducing operational costs amid a challenging economic landscape marked by the naira’s devaluation. CEO Mayowa Olugbile emphasized that this initiative aims to create a digital-first jurisdiction with tax incentives, streamlined immigration processes, and simplified operations to help startups thrive across Africa. He anticipates the emergence of more locally-hosted services priced in naira within five years. "With appropriate policy support, Nigeria has the potential to become one of the fastest-growing cloud markets globally, but affordability remains a critical challenge," he stated. Despite these advancements, the sector faces significant hurdles, particularly regarding power reliability. Frequent electricity outages and high diesel costs are severely impacting profitability. In response, developers are increasingly exploring renewable energy and natural gas solutions to ensure stable operations and attract sustainability-focused investors. Open Access Data Centres plans to primarily utilize natural gas to power its large-scale facility in Lagos, according to CEO Ayotunde Coker. "Gas represents our most sustainable option," he explained. "Achieving 98-99% availability is our goal, minimizing reliance on diesel to the greatest extent possible." Currently, Nigeria has 13,000 megawatts of installed power capacity; however, it only supplies about 5,800 megawatts to the grid, compelling data center operators to create their own energy resources. "Regardless of utility performance, having diesel backup is still necessary," Coker concluded.
