Nextdoor, the neighborhood social platform, is rolling out a significant redesign, introducing what it calls the "new Nextdoor." This updated version enhances the user experience with features like local news updates, real-time alerts, and an AI-driven tool known as "Faves," aimed at helping users discover local businesses. Originally launched 15 years ago, Nextdoor has been a go-to app for community discussions, allowing residents to exchange recommendations for services like plumbing and dining options. However, growth has stagnated in recent years due to issues with misinformation and controversial posts. In response, the company is making strides to revitalize user engagement by ensuring the platform is more useful and relevant. According to CEO and co-founder Nirav Tolia, the goal of the redesign is to enrich the quality and volume of local content. To achieve this, Nextdoor has formed partnerships with 3,500 local publications across North America and the UK, including well-known outlets like the San Francisco Standard and The Toronto Star. Tolia emphasized the importance of integrating local news, stating, "Nextdoor has historically relied solely on user-generated content. To ensure we capture what’s happening in real-time, we need to incorporate local journalism." These partnerships are non-commercial, meaning Nextdoor is not compensating the publishers nor hosting their content. Instead, the app will display headlines, snippets, and images, directing users to the respective news sites for full articles. Users can engage with the news through a comment section under each post. In addition to news content, Nextdoor has introduced real-time alerts for various emergencies such as weather updates, traffic issues, and natural disasters. These alerts will be visualized on a dynamic neighborhood map, facilitating timely community discussions about safety. The company has collaborated with services like Samdesk and Weather.com to enable these real-time notifications. Tolia explained that alerts are tailored to specific neighborhoods, stating, "Unlike broader alerts, our notifications can pinpoint exactly which homes are affected. For instance, if there’s a power outage, only those impacted will receive the alert." The new "Faves" feature aims to enhance local discovery by providing curated recommendations from neighbors. Users can ask specific questions about local attractions, and an AI model trained on years of community discussions will generate responses. Tolia described it as the first truly localized AI that leverages neighbor conversations for insights, ensuring that information is relevant and unique to each community. Nextdoor's commitment to capturing local word-of-mouth information distinguishes it from larger platforms like Google or ChatGPT, as it focuses on fostering direct neighbor interactions. Tolia noted the significance of being seen not just as a social network but as a vital community resource, aiming to make the platform more integral to daily local life.
