Midnight social media curfew and limits to infinite scrolling proposed for older UK teens

The U.K. government has unveiled a set of new proposals aimed at safeguarding older teenagers on social media platforms. Among the suggested measures are a midnight curfew and restrictions on addictive features like infinite scrolling. These regulations specifically target teens aged 16 to 17, who would automatically have a curfew in place from midnight until 12 a.m. Furthermore, features that encourage excessive use, such as autoplay and infinite scrolling, would be disabled by default, although teens will have the option to override these settings. These initiatives are anticipated to be implemented by Spring 2027, following encouraging findings from a recent trial aimed at understanding social media's impact on youth. Involving over 300 teens and parents across the U.K., the trial revealed that an overnight curfew significantly improved sleep quality and concentration levels among participants. The trial explored various intervention strategies, which included limiting app usage to just 15 minutes a day, enforcing a night-time curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and even removing certain social media applications entirely. Results indicated a range of mental health benefits, such as enhanced mood, reduced stress levels, and increased daytime energy. However, participants also pointed out a "social and emotional trade-off," recognizing that social media plays a crucial role in maintaining connections with peers who were not subject to the same limitations. Consequently, the overnight curfew emerged as the most favored option, striking a balance between the health benefits and the social needs of teens. Earlier this year, former Prime Minister Keir Starmer proposed a comprehensive ban on social media for individuals under 16, following Australia's precedent as the first nation to implement such a legal restriction. If enacted, this ban would encompass popular platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and X.
