Study pinpoints when bow and arrow came to North America

Recent findings indicate that North Americans transitioned to the bow and arrow roughly 1,400 years ago, replacing the dart and atlatl. This shift occurred more rapidly in southern regions, while northern inhabitants initially incorporated the bow and arrow alongside their traditional tools, gradually phasing out the atlatl over the course of a millennium. This significant study originates from the Experimental Archaeology Laboratory at Kent State University, led by experimental archaeologist Metin Eren. Eren and his team focus on understanding ancient technologies, conducting experiments ranging from stone tool creation to butchery and textiles. Notably, Eren gained some fame in 2019 for testing an Inuit myth involving rudimentary knives made from frozen feces, which earned him an Ig Nobel prize for his unconventional approach. Despite the intriguing nature of his work, Eren is committed to serious scientific inquiry. His laboratory has explored various topics, including the sounds produced during flint-knapping and the efficiency of Clovis points in butchery, collaborating with hunters for practical demonstrations. Additionally, they have conducted ballistics experiments to investigate whether certain stone blades were designed with a backing that enhanced their performance. Students in Eren's lab often have the opportunity to practice throwing point-tipped spears using an atlatl, a clever device that employs leverage to enhance the launch of darts or spears. This tool has a rich history, having been developed by numerous ancient cultures, including the Aztecs, Mayans, Greeks, Romans, and various Indigenous Australian groups.
