New Mexico seeking changes to Meta's platform after jury finds company liable

New Mexico is advocating for significant changes to Meta's platforms in the wake of a jury ruling that found the company liable for not adequately protecting children. Attorney General Raúl Torrez shared this update during an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday. "We will be seeking injunctive relief," Torrez stated, outlining the next steps in addressing the state's public nuisance claim. This relief would involve altering the platform's design features, implementing robust age verification processes, adjusting algorithms, and appointing an independent monitor to oversee these changes. Torrez emphasized the need for Meta to fundamentally alter its business operations within New Mexico. On Tuesday, the jury determined that Meta must pay the state $375 million due to its failure to comply with laws aimed at protecting children from online exploitation. In response, a Meta spokesperson expressed disagreement with the verdict and confirmed plans to appeal the decision. The second phase of the trial, which will not involve a jury, is scheduled to commence on May 4. Torrez also indicated that the state would seek additional financial support to enhance the safety of its digital environment for children, aiming for a more secure online experience for the youth of New Mexico.
