The newly appointed leader of the Pentagon's ambitious Golden Dome missile defense program is acutely aware of the urgent timeline set by President Trump. General Michael Guetlein, confirmed by the Senate last week, has taken on the monumental task of steering this project, which is forecasted to require a staggering $175 billion over the next three years. On his second day in office, Guetlein outlined his strategic plan, emphasizing the need for frequent demonstrations of progress. "We are aiming for incremental showcases every six months, as we are racing against the clock," he stated. This commitment reflects the military's determination to deliver tangible results within Trump's designated timeframe. During a discussion at a Washington, DC event hosted by the Space Foundation, Guetlein expressed his urgency to achieve measurable outcomes. He noted the skepticism from analysts and retired military officials regarding the feasibility of meeting all the ambitious goals set for Golden Dome by the end of 2028. However, Guetlein assured that his team would be able to present "a capability" within the next three years. He emphasized a strategic approach that aligns with Space Force policy, stating, "We've got to exploit anything and everything we've possibly got." This includes a heavy reliance on partnerships with commercial companies, research institutions, and international allies, particularly from Canada, to bolster the Golden Dome initiative. The Defense Department reaffirmed the necessity for a comprehensive national effort to deter and, if required, to counteract threats against the United States. They highlighted the country's technological edge, skilled workforce, and strong leadership as pivotal elements in advancing national defense capabilities. The department expressed confidence in Guetlein's leadership as he embarks on this critical mission.
