In a surprising turn of events, the newly appointed interim CEO of Astronomer, Pete DeJoy, has expressed his hope to steer the tech startup away from the recent media storm that has garnered national attention. DeJoy stepped into the role following the unexpected resignation of CEO Andy Byron, who was recently filmed in a compromising moment with the company's head of human resources at a Coldplay concert. Reflecting on the unusual circumstances surrounding his appointment, DeJoy shared his thoughts in a LinkedIn post, describing the past few days as surreal and unprecedented for a startup in the data and AI sector. He noted that the level of media scrutiny faced by Astronomer is something few companies experience, let alone a startup like theirs. "While I would never have wished for it to happen like this, Astronomer is now a household name," he remarked. The incident occurred during a concert in Boston, where Byron was captured on the venue's big screen with his arms around Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot. The moment quickly became a topic of speculation, with lead singer Chris Martin joking, "Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." A video of the encounter circulated widely online, amplifying the media frenzy. DeJoy, who co-founded Astronomer in 2017 and previously served as chief product officer, emphasized his commitment to the company's mission and its employees. He mentioned that Astronomer is looking to fill the CEO position soon and reiterated the importance of continuing to build on their success, stating, "Our story is very much still being written." The company is known for its open-source data operations platform, Astro, and recently secured $93 million in funding led by Bain Ventures and Salesforce Ventures. DeJoy concluded his message by asserting that their mission transcends any single moment, underscoring the trust their customers place in them for ambitious data and AI initiatives.
