For giant carnivorous dinosaurs, big size didn’t mean a big bite

In a fascinating twist to the long-held perceptions of dinosaur behavior, recent research has shed light on the bite forces of some of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs. The iconic battle between Spinosaurus and T. rex, famously depicted in Jurassic Park III, serves as a backdrop to this new understanding. While Spinosaurus was once thought to be the largest carnivore to have ever roamed the Earth, findings from a study led by paleobiologist Andre Rowe at the University of Bristol indicate that size does not necessarily equate to strength in the animal kingdom. Rowe's research focuses on the biomechanics of these ancient predators, suggesting that if Spinosaurus and T. rex had coexisted, the latter would likely have retained its status as the apex predator. "The Spinosaurus and the T. rex didn’t inhabit the same time or continent, but if they had, I don’t see Spinosaurus coming out on top," he explained, emphasizing the importance of understanding each species' unique adaptations. The T. rex, with its well-preserved fossil record, is known for having one of the most powerful bite forces among all animals. Rowe noted that while numerous complete T. rex skulls exist for analysis, the fossil records for other large carnivores, such as Spinosaurus and Allosaurus, are much more limited. This scarcity has led to misconceptions about their capabilities. "There was an assumption that they all shared similar predatory strategies despite not being closely related or occupying the same environments," Rowe added, underscoring the need for rigorous testing of these long-standing beliefs about giant carnivorous dinosaurs.
