US government says it got hacked — again

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently examining a significant cyber breach affecting its Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN). This platform is essential for federal, state, and local governments, as well as law enforcement agencies, to exchange crucial intelligence. A senior lawmaker has voiced concerns that this data leak could pose a serious threat to national security. According to reports from Nextgov and Bleeping Computer, the cyberattack on HSIN occurred between late May and early June, potentially exposing sensitive information shared among government bodies. A spokesperson from DHS acknowledged awareness of a recent incident involving this unclassified legacy information-sharing system, although the specific data compromised remains unclear. This incident adds to ongoing scrutiny regarding the government's cybersecurity capabilities, especially following recent budget cuts across federal agencies, including Homeland Security and its Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Mark Warner, a Democratic senator and member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, emphasized the sensitivity of the information handled by HSIN, stating that its exposure could jeopardize national security. The HSIN platform has been instrumental in coordinating responses to major events, such as the ongoing World Cup games in the U.S. and the tragic mid-air collision of an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that resulted in 67 fatalities last year. While the identity and motives of the hackers remain unknown, this breach represents yet another incident in a troubling trend of cybersecurity failures within the federal government. Since January 2025, the administration has faced numerous significant breaches, including unauthorized sharing of classified information and the exposure of personal data from federal databases. Earlier this year, the FBI classified an incident as a “major cyber incident” after inadvertently disclosing the phone numbers of surveillance targets, raising further alarm about the effectiveness of current cybersecurity measures.
