In a significant development earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its intention to dismiss findings from 2009, which stated that greenhouse gas emissions posed a threat to public health in the United States. The agency cited several reasons for this reevaluation, with a key point being the evolution of scientific understanding regarding climate change over the past 15 years. Recognizing the need for updated insights, the National Academies of Science (NAS) commissioned a team of scientists to reassess the current understanding of greenhouse gases. This report was released just before the public comment period on the EPA's new proposals concluded. The NAS's findings are unequivocal: the EPA's 2019 conclusion that greenhouse gases present a danger to the public remains valid and has only been reinforced by subsequent research. The original endangerment finding, established during the Obama administration, outlined the risks associated with greenhouse gases, highlighting both direct health impacts and indirect economic repercussions. This foundational analysis has allowed for regulatory measures under the Clean Air Act, aimed at curbing emissions from transportation and electricity generation. However, many of these initiatives have faced legal challenges or have been abandoned altogether. During the Trump administration, efforts were made to implement minimal regulations instead of overturning the scientific consensus. The current administration is taking a more aggressive stance, seeking to nullify the endangerment findings and reduce the likelihood of any future regulatory actions by providing various justifications for this approach.
