Android adds a feature to stop you from doomscrolling

Android has introduced a new tool aimed at curbing the habit of doomscrolling, responding to growing concerns over the impact of social media on mental health. On Tuesday, Google unveiled the 'Pause Point' feature, which is designed to help users take a step back from addictive applications on their devices. The Pause Point functionality prompts users to pause for 10 seconds after opening any app they've designated as distracting. Popular platforms like TikTok, Instagram, X, and YouTube could be among those users choose to label as distractions. This move by Google comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny regarding the effects of social media and algorithms on users, especially minors. Dieter Bohn, Google's Director of Product Operations, emphasized the importance of providing users with tools to disconnect when necessary. He acknowledged that many people find themselves mindlessly scrolling for extended periods. While traditional app timers remind users to take breaks, Pause Point takes a more proactive approach by interrupting the app's launch sequence and encouraging users to reconsider their choices. Google suggests using the time afforded by Pause Point for short breathing exercises or exploring alternative activities. The feature can recommend more productive apps, such as fitness trackers or reading applications, and even allow users to browse through personal photos that inspire them to engage in other hobbies, like outdoor activities or arts and crafts. Additionally, users have the option to set personalized app timers, enhancing the intentionality of their screen time. Unlike typical timers that can be easily dismissed, Pause Point requires users to restart their phones to disable it, prompting them to think carefully before doing so. Although it may lack the playful appeal of some self-care apps, the integration of Pause Point directly into Android could significantly enhance its effectiveness and user adoption.
