
The entrepreneurial duo behind Anchor, which was sold to Spotify, is venturing into the education sector with their latest innovation, Oboe. This AI-driven application allows users to craft lightweight and adaptable learning courses on a wide array of subjects just by entering a simple prompt. The platform is designed to cater to diverse interests, including science, history, foreign languages, current events, and even personal development topics. At its launch, Oboe will present nine unique course formats, aimed at delivering learning experiences tailored to individual preferences. According to co-founder Nir Zicherman, the inspiration for Oboe came after his stint at Spotify, where he focused on expanding the audiobooks segment, enhancing access to quality educational materials bundled with music subscriptions. Unlike traditional AI chatbots, Oboe streamlines the learning process without requiring users to engage in back-and-forth interactions. Instead, it offers a variety of formats, including text and visuals, audio lessons, interactive games, and quizzes. For users who prefer auditory learning, Oboe provides two audio formats: one mimicking a university lecture and the other resembling an engaging podcast discussion. Zicherman elaborated on the app's sophisticated internal structure, likening it to a multi-agent system that operates in parallel to produce courses swiftly. This system is designed to generate high-quality, personalized learning experiences almost instantaneously. Oboe employs agents that oversee various aspects of course creation—from the architecture and content verification to sourcing real images from the internet. The team is committed to ensuring that the courses are not only engaging and enjoyable but also accurate and tailored to individual learning goals. Additionally, Oboe is developing a recommendation engine to guide users in exploring topics more deeply based on their interests. Zicherman emphasized the need for a more effective educational platform, remarking on the challenges of the internet, which often captures attention without teaching effectively. Oboe aims to fulfill a universal desire for knowledge, providing a comprehensive educational resource for lifelong learners. Initially, users will have access to any course created by others for free, with the ability to create up to five courses monthly at no cost. After that, there are two subscription tiers available: Oboe Plus, allowing for an additional 30 courses for $15 monthly, and Oboe Pro, offering 100 courses for $40 monthly. The app is set to launch on the web and mobile web, with plans for native iOS and Android applications in the future. The startup has secured a $4 million seed funding round, led by Eniac Ventures, with contributions from various investors, including Haystack and Tim Ferriss. Oboe's team consists of five full-time members, including Zicherman, while co-founder Michael Mignano remains a partner at Lightspeed but is involved as a board member at Oboe.
