A former physician has launched Robyn, an empathetic AI companion

Jenny Shao, a former physician who completed her residency at Harvard, has launched a groundbreaking AI assistant named Robyn. Recognizing the profound psychological effects of isolation during the pandemic, Shao pivoted from her medical career to create a digital companion that offers emotional support. Robyn is designed to be an empathetic and emotionally intelligent AI, positioned distinctly from existing chatbots and therapy applications. Unlike platforms such as ChatGPT or companionship apps like Replika, Robyn seeks to provide a supportive presence without replacing human therapists. Shao emphasizes that Robyn should not be viewed as a clinical replacement but rather as a personal assistant who understands and supports users. Drawing from her research experience in human memory under Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel, Shao has incorporated insights into how people remember and process emotions into Robyn's design. This allows the AI to better connect with users and adapt to their needs. Available on iOS, Robyn features an onboarding process akin to journaling or mental health apps. Users provide information about their goals and emotional responses, enabling Robyn to tailor its interactions. For instance, when tasked with creating a morning routine, Robyn engages users in meaningful conversation about their habits and preferences. As users interact with Robyn, the app reveals insights about their emotional patterns, attachment styles, and personal growth areas. Additionally, the startup has developed a demo website that illustrates how users can benefit from Robyn's insights based on their social media profiles. Safety is a priority for Shao and her team, who have implemented strict measures to protect users. The app provides crisis hotline information and directs users to emergency services if discussions of self-harm arise. Furthermore, Robyn is designed to refrain from answering trivial queries, focusing instead on personal development. The startup has successfully secured $5.5 million in seed funding, led by M13, with notable investors including Google Maps co-founder Lars Rasmussen and ex-Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman. With a growing team, Robyn's emotional memory system has captured the attention of investors, who see it as a solution to the widespread disconnection people feel in a technology-driven world. As Robyn launches in the U.S., the developers face the challenge of ensuring user safety while preventing the anthropomorphization of the chatbot. The goal is to enhance human connections, fostering self-awareness and emotional intelligence through technology. The subscription for Robyn is priced at $19.99 per month or $199 annually.
