A recent study conducted by the UK government has unveiled that neurodiverse employees may derive greater benefits from AI assistants, such as chatbots, compared to their neurotypical counterparts. The findings from the Department for Business and Trade stem from an evaluation of the Microsoft 365 Copilot trial, which reported an overall satisfaction rate of 72%. However, neurodiverse participants demonstrated notably higher levels of satisfaction, achieving a confidence level of 90%, and were significantly more inclined to recommend the tool, boasting a 95% confidence level. Participants shared transformative experiences during follow-up interviews. One individual with ADHD remarked that the AI tool had effectively "leveled the playing field," while another user with dyslexia expressed how it "empowered" them to tackle tasks, especially report writing, with newfound confidence. Another participant highlighted the advantages of Copilot over existing accessibility software, stating that it "does a hell of a lot more" and seamlessly integrates into their applications, eliminating the need for separate programs. The benefits of AI tools appeared to extend beyond neurodiversity. Users with hearing impairments noted that AI-driven meeting transcription enabled them to engage more actively in discussions. One participant explained how this feature allowed them to quickly recall and share their thoughts, rather than feeling sidelined by the fast-paced nature of meetings, which previously left them exhausted. Titled "The Evaluation of the M365 Copilot Pilot in the Department for Business and Trade," the study suggests that AI tools may be effectively addressing accessibility challenges within the workplace that traditional accommodations often overlook. Conducted between October 2024 and March 2025, the research involved diary studies, interviews, and task observations to assess the impact of the AI assistant on various user groups. Although 300 participants consented to analysis from 1,000 distributed licenses, the study does not specify how many identified as neurodiverse. Despite the 90% confidence level for satisfaction being slightly below typical academic standards, the strong inclination to recommend the tool indicates a significant positive difference.
